Skopje: practical information

  • IF TRAVELLING FROM OUTSIDE MACEDONIA DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASSPORT!
  • Getting there from Pristina is very easy, and buses are frequent, costing 5.5Euros one way I did it in a day trip, leaving from Pristina bus station at 8:30am, and returning at 18:10pm.
  • Note that if you return to Pristina bus station they will drop you off at the side of the road at not back at the same place you departed. The bus station is pretty close, though, and when it happened to me I was lucky enough to spot a taxi just over the road to take me back to the other end of town.
  • Macedonia uses Dinars, which you can only get in the country. If you withdraw more than you use, don't forget to swap them back before leaving.
  • I also downloaded an offline Google map for use in Skopje and it worked really well here.
  • If getting a taxi from the bus station to the centre, remember that the Alexander the Great statue is referred to here as 'the man on the horse' because AtG is the Greek name.
  • The Skopje 2014 project, creating loads of fancy buildings, is controversial because it has cost 560 million Euros that some people believe could have been better spent on other things, so don't expect everyone to like it
  • There is a free (tip-based) walking tour at 10am
